Difference Between IIT JAM & GATE- Which IS Better

Main reason behind organising IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) and GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is to get an admission post graduate education programmes.

Every year Lakh of candidates appear in these examinations to get admission in high level institutes.

 IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.):


IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is a national level examination organized by the IITs and IISc on a rotational basis. IITs started conducting the JAM in the 2004 – 2005 academic session.
Candidates can get admission through this exam in following Programmes

  • M.Sc. (Four Semesters),
  • Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D.,
  • M.Sc.-MTech., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree & other courses.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering):


Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IIs) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The score card through gate is used for admissions to various Post Graduations programs like Master of Engineering, Master of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy.

This score card is also used by Several Indian public sector undertaking government recruitment.

Candidates can appear only for one subject paper in IIT JAM. Candidate must choose their subject wisely while filling their application form.

Exam Pattern for IIT JAM:


Difference between IIT JAM & GATE Exam Pattern can be seen easily.

Let’s see the exam pattern for IIT JAM. IIT JAM Syllabus makes a big difference in the pattern of IIT JAM Exam.

  • The exam will be organized through online mode.
  • The total exam duration will be 3 hours.
  • Question paper will be asked in English language only.
  • There will be total 60 questions in the examination.
  • The exam has been divided into three sections (30 MCQs in Section "A", 10 MCQs in Section "B" and 20 NAT in section "C")
  • The question paper will have 60 questions of 100 marks.
  • There is no negative marking for Section B & C.

Exam Pattern for GATE:


  • The examination will be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • Marks will be divided sectional i.e. Mathematics section carries around 15% of the total marks, General Aptitude carries 15% and other remaining 70% is devoted to the main subject of the paper.
  • There will be 65 questions for 100 marks in exam.
  • There will be two types of questions. First type is Multiple Choice Questions and other one is Numerical Answer Questions.

IIT JAM & GATE – Other Difference:


  • If a candidate wants to take admission for Masters in Technology from IIT then he/she have to appear for GATE examinations which is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology. But candidates want to take admission after their graduation for their post-graduation in M.Sc. or Ph.D. from IIT or IISc then he/she have to appear for IIT JAM examination which is conducted by IITs.
  • Candidates who want to appear in IIT JAM Exam, need to prepare only for a single subject but for GATE Exams, candidates have to read at least 10 subjects to clear the exam.
  • A bachelor degree is needed to take admission through IIT JAM.
  • Qualifying degree is needed for Gate is Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs
